These days in the job market, if you don’t have this one simple skill, you’re doomed (unless you like flipping burgers). here, that skill is called “catching the mouse.” Once you got it, you’re clicking away into a new world of possibilities and discoveries, even new technologies–and it’s all because of that one mouse!
For those totally confused, let’s let go of the metaphor and think a bit here. Check out the job ads for a moment and look for some of the qualifications they ask for: excellent writing skills, Word proficiency, research skills, etc. etc. Think of the one thing that all these qualifications have in common. If you still can’t figure it out, look at your home office (if you have one) or simply head over to your local library and sit at one of those nifty catalog searches they have now (not the old ones with the filing cabinets, though–those are extinct).
What do you see? Computers! That’s the ticket right there. Yes, the one skill you need to really excel in the workforce is with computers. You have to know how to at least use the mouse!–if not know how to browse the web, use Microsoft Word–or any word processor for that matter. You need to understand e-mail, web sites, maybe even HTML. Computer skills, people; that’s where it’s at.
Here’s one important tip if you’re still in school: whether or not it’s a requirement, get yourself into a computer class. Learn how to use one, if you don’t already know how. Get proficient in it. Seriously, it just might save your professional future.
